Local photographer Melissa “Mimi” Nolledo slides a sheet of paper across the table in a dim corner of Belly restaurant.

It’s a copy of a letter on Doubleday stationery addressed to Nolledo’s father, Wilfrido Nolledo, a literary icon in the Philippines, dated June 9, 1987, inviting him to work with the publisher. Standing out from the typewriter script is a big, round signature from the editor: Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

Wilfrido Nolledo was the author of “But for the Lovers,” a 1970 novel depicting World War II through the Filipino experience, a literary work oft compared to “Catch-22.” READ MORE
